I have enjoyed a few very nice wines in the past month and have been able to try a few new varietals.
Christmas day was also a chance to enjoy some good wines with even better food and enjoy the company of my sister in law, her husband and his family.
For dinner, we stuffed ourselves on roast goose, beef tenderloin and an outstanding lasagna. Can't forget the many hors d' oeuvres that were devoured while catching up on the years happenings. I would also be amiss if I did not mention my daughters first attempt with a fruit cake. Best I ever had.
For wines we opened a California Zinfandel, a Tuscan Chianti and some Finger Lakes Rieslings. One that was not opened was a 2009 Maison de La Colline La Craie Sancerre. I brought this one home and opened tonight with a simple meal of pasta and clam sauce made with clams, olive oil, butter, garlic, basil and parsley. I feel a bit guilty, because I think I sneaked out with the best wine of the day.
Sancerre is a French wine produced in the environs of Sancerre in the eastern part of the Loire valley, southeast of Orléans. Almost all of the appellation lies on the left bank of the Loire, opposite Pouilly-Fumé. It is well regarded for and primarily associated with Sauvignon blanc, making wines of great purity and elegance. This wine was actually bottled in the Burgudy region just north of Chablis on the far eastern end of the Loire and northwest of Orléans. The aromas of this French Sauvignon Blanc were complex. At first there was peach, with grapefruit. Then floral and slate with a little lime and grass. In the mouth there was a lot of peach and lime, some grapefruit and a little mango. Lots of fruit and floral felt really nice. The finish was OK, not real long, but paired well with the clam sauce.
I never was big on French wines, especially whites. The Sancerre will give me something to investigate more in the new year. This one I bought for $14. Well worth the price. I highly recommend for any fish or white sauce.
